FM200 (HFC-227ea) Gas Fire Suppression Systems

FM200 gas, commonly known in the market, was developed as an alternative to Halon 1301, which was banned due to its ozone-depleting properties under the Montreal Protocol. It is a colorless, odorless, and electrically non-conductive clean extinguishing agent. FM200, composed of Carbon, Fluorine, and Hydrogen compounds (CF3CHFCF3) and known by the code HFC-227ea, is an extinguishing agent approved by numerous worldwide standards and organizations including UL, FM, LPCB, and VdS.

FM200 gas fire suppression systems cool the fire by reducing oxygen levels to around 14% and control it through physical effects. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined it to be safe for human breathing and non-harmful to both human health and the ozone layer. The systems are designed in accordance with TS EN 15004 or NFPA 2001 standards. The system must be verified through hydraulic calculations using the licensed software of the supplied brand. FM200 gas concentration has a 7.9% ratio with a 30% safety factor for Class A surface fires. In environments with high Class A classification and high cable density, the ratio is 8.5%.

The FM200 gas fire suppression system operates on the principle of total flooding protection. When the system’s detectors sense smoke, heat, or flame, the FM200 suppression system activates either automatically or manually. The FM200 gas stored in cylinders is discharged into the protected space through piping and discharge nozzles within a short period of 10 seconds. It maintains its effectiveness within the space for 10 minutes, preventing re-ignition.
